Middlesbrough interested in signing £7.9m Premier League outcast

Jairo Riedewald hasn’t played a Premier League game for Crystal Palace this season and could be offered an escape by Championship hopefuls Boro.

Jairo Riedewald looked set to be a major player in Frank de Boer’s Crystal Palace revolution when he arrived in 2017 for a fee of £7.9 million, as reported by The Guardian.

But, after four winless Premier League games, Riedewald’s former Ajax boss was gone and suddenly the versatile defender found himself on the fringes at Selhurst Park.

De Boer’s replacement, Roy Hodgson, clearly doesn’t share the same view on Riedewald’s ability and it is telling that the 22-year-old hasn’t made a single Premier League appearance in the 2018/19 season, having managed just four in the previous campaign.

And, according to TEAMtalk, Riedewald is likely to be loaned out this month with clubs in Spain, Holland and France keen.

Interestingly, Middlesbrough would be willing to offer him an escape route too.

Tony Pulis’ Boro are fifth in the Championship table and just four points adrift of the automatic promotion positions.

Riedewald, should he arrive, would offer plenty of versatility due to his ability to play at full-back, centre-half and defensive midfield.

Middlesbrough would be hoping that the three-time Dutch international can replicate the impact made by Mo Besic at the Riverside, the Bosnian midfielder having shone after arriving on loan from Everton a year ago before making the deal permanent in the summer.
