By the conclusion of PITRAPAKSHA the DEVIPAKSHA starts symbolizing the puja of Shakti in nine different forms and it’s believed that Ma Durga with her four children Lokhi (laxmi), Ganesha, Saraswati and Kartikeya comes to her parent’s home from her consort’s home that is from Kailash which is regarded as lord Shiva’s home. She may come in many different forms of transportation ranging from swing, horse, boat etc and its believed that each has its own significance and stands for either devastation or good fortune in one form or the other.
The deities arrival is announced by the enchantment of chandi path or the pious mantras (holy words) in the early hours of the day in West Bengal it’s called MAHALAYA on that day people go and offer tarpan or pay their gratitude to their passed away ancestors by the banks of river Hoogly or any other holy river, so as to our ancestors may rest in peace and solitude, with this the Devipaksha is announced. On this day a ritual called as CHOKHUDAAN or donating or making of idols eyes are done this is regarded as a very pious occasion.
It’s also known as Shardiya Durga Utsav as per the season which is present in India at this time of the year, and celebrated by all Hindus through the country with much valour, glamour and grand decorum and also in other neighboring and European countries has been found to be celebrating this festivity with the same energy and fervor as in India by the Asian communities, and its marked straight by nine days of celebration followed by visarjan or immersing the idols in any holy rivers after nine days of vigourous puja or offering prayers with full heart and soul believing that she’s going back to Kailash parbat or the peaks of Himalayas and again to come back next year and that is also marked by the celebration of lord Ram coming back to Ayodhya after killing Ravana the devil king of Lanka and after spending fourteen long years in exile with his wife Sita, younger brother Laxman and a strong coordinate lord Hanuman, this is marked as Dushera when three paper made huge cracker packed idols of three devils are set on fire followed by Vijaydashmi and distribution of sweets to the near and dear ones.
