STRESS SYMPTOMS

In to three categories symptomisation of stress can be done or symptoms of stress can manifest in three categories:

– EMOTIONAL
– BEHAVIOURIAL
– PHYSICAL

1. EMOTIONAL SYMPTOMS OF STRESS:

Stress may cause many complaints and conditions, when one or more symptoms occur more frequently than normal or are more difficult to shove or shrug off its an indication that your stress levels have gone unacceptably high, and its high time to take effective measures and steps to reduce the stress by taking effective steps towards lifestyle.

– Worry or anxiety
– Confusion or inability to take decisions
– Feeling ill
– Feeling overwhelmed or out of control by events
– Mood changes
– Depression
– Frustration
– Hostility
– Helplessness
– Impatient and irritability
– Restlessness
– Being very lethargic
– Insomnia or difficulty in sleeping
– Increased intake of external stimulus like alcohol or smoking etc
– Changing eating habits
– Reduction in sex drive
– Relying more on medication

2. BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS OF STRESS:

Stress influences behavior in the long run. Behavioral symptoms of long term stress.

When an individual is under pressure or in the clutches of stress then these symptoms seen rapidly like:

– Talking too fast or too loud
– Yawning
– Fiddling, fidgeting, twitching, nail biting, grinding teeth, drumming fingers, pacing up and down etc.
– Bad moods
– Being irritable
– Defensiveness
– Being critical
– Aggression
– Irrationality
– Overreaction or reacting emotionally
– Reduced personal effectiveness
– Being unreasonably negative
– Making less realistic judgments
– Unable to concentrate n indecisiveness or unable to mk decisions
– Forgetful
– Making more mistakes
– Being more accident prone
– Changing work habits
– Increased absentism
– Neglect of personal appearance

These symptoms of stress should not be taken in isolation rather other factors could also cause them, however if an individual finds these traits exhibiting or repeating or recognizing a number of them, then it could be an alarming call for an individual to go for an investigation and then worth going for tress management program.

3. PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS OF STRESS:

This symptoms in physical form could manifest in two kinds – the short term symptoms and the long term symptoms.

Short term physical symptoms

These majorly occurs as one’s body adapts to perceived physical threat and are caused by the release of adrenaline although one may perceive these as utterly unpleasant and negative ones, but they are signs as your body is ready for the explosive action that assists survival or high performance.

– Faster heart rate
– Increased sweating
– Cold skin
– Cold hands and feet
– Nausea like feeling or more commonly known as butterflies in the stomach
– Rapid/faster breathing tense muscles
– Dry mouth
– Urge to urinate more frequently/abnormal bowl movements
– Diarrhea

SHORT TERM PERFORMANCE EFFECTS

While adrenaline helps us to survive in fight or flight situation, but it also have negative impact on situations where the case is different as it interferes with clear judgment and makes it more difficult to take the time to make good, wise, legitimate decisions.
